    I remembered another reason for using a UV filter……lenses like the Canon EF 17-40 L are not weather sealed until a filter is attached!

    A note on coatings: the anti-reflective coatings work at only a narrow range of wavelengths. You need a multi-coated filter to cover the visual range. These are ‘quarter-wave coatings’.

    As a rule of thumb, uncoated glass costs you 3-4% per surface of EACH lens element; coated surfaces cost you only about 1%.
