I know this is taboo because it is does not refer to DSLRs, but I believe that the card speed makes a difference when you are recording video to a point and shoot camera. My Canon S2 IS can record video in AVI format until the card is full as long as the write speed to the card can keep up. I’ve never taken more than 2 minutes of video at once, but I’ve had issues with the video recording automatically stopping around 30 seconds and can only guess it is because some card write problem.
