Viewfinder

Definition

The small window through which photographers look to compose their shots.

Comments / Tips / Experiences

  • On most cameras, the viewfinder only shows you about 95 to 98 percent of what the sensor will capture. This is usually not a big deal, unless you have recomposed a shot to keep a distracting element just out of the frame. It may still show up there.
  • Use your LCD screen to compose only when you are adjusting height on a tripod or taking shots from odd angles in order to be sneaky. Composing in the viewfinder puts the camera against your head, which can provide stability and decrease the chance of camera shake at slower shutter speeds.
