Dodging

Definition

Dodging, as opposed to burning, is a way to subtly lighten up portions of your image in your image editing software. It is originally a technique used in analog film developing which made it to the digital image-editing world in which in the exposure of the photo paper you would mask certain parts of the photo that need to be lightened, thus dodging the light.
