Candid Photography

Definition

Candid photography is photography that concentrates on being spontaneous, of capturing people in a moment of time, doing something natural, of being themselves. The subject may or may not know they are being photographed, but the image is unposed. These images concentrate more on capturing reality rather than being technically perfect. One of the most well-known photographers in this field was Henri Cartier-Bressonhttp://www.henricartierbresson.org/, though a predecessor was Andre Kertesz http://apphoto.8m.com/kol10.htm

Comments / Tips / Experiences

If you take a candid picture of someone it is considered good form to let them know you have done so afterwards and ask their permission to use it. If it’s a good shot you might also consider offering them a print.
