artifacts

Definition

Artifacts are image errors, which mostly occur while compressing the picture in a lossy format (like JPG, e.g). Lossy means that some of the image information will be combined in the picture (therefore, it is lost for later re-editing purposes).

Artifacts can also be caused by the camera, the sensor or the lens.
