Definition

A monopod (also known: unipod) is a staff (one single stand) used to support the camera. This staff allows the photographer to take photos with a slower shutter speed. Unlike a tripod (three stands) it is not capable of taking very long exposures, but still it can reduce camera shake significantly.

Monopods are very popular with wildlife and nature photographers, who go on long treks and have to carry large loads on there backs. Monopods are mostly made of aluminium or carbon, making them very light and easy to carry.
