http://blobfisk.com/index.html

Someone found a memory card in Portugal, not with your typical holiday snaps. They decided to try and use the internet to find the person by submitting to Digg and various other social sites to help find the owner.

Thought it was an interesting idea.

Interesting idea to put a text file on the card with your contact details on it.

I have a little HTML file with my contact info in it and an autorun.inf file so that it pops up the information when the card is inserted on most Windows machines.

I have a little template file if anyone wants it: lost-and-found.zip

Now I've heard of this on external portable drives like my new Hyperdrive SPACE but don't think this is 100% realistic on a Mem Card. Why? Simply stated all best practices I've ever heard of say to "Format" the card as opposed to Deleting files. As such, it wou;d/should wipe out and files including the html.

Retort?

A format will "remove" the file, even on you portable drive, unless it is a full format, the file is there, just marked as empty space in the FAT.

If someone finds your card, and formats it, well they were probably not going to ever try and locate the owner to give it back.

I only ever format my memory cards when first purchased, after that I just delete as all your camera's format does is wipe the FAT table, same as a quick format on your computer.

I just have my initials written on the CF card label.
I may add my Flickr site or email address, just in case I ever lose the card.

True, but at least his incompetence led to his "removal" from society, for a time at least.

Yeah it's always nice when they do that for us instead of having to go to the trouble to find them.

That text file bit is a really good idea, I just did it on all my memory cards myself. Cool article, I hope the guy gets his card back!

Or even add an image to the card with the same data, then if you lose your camera and someone browses the card, you may be in with a chance.
